When Is a Fever Too High?
Fever isn’t an illness in itself. It’s usually a sign that your body is fighting an infection or other condition.
What’s a normal body temperature? While everyone is different, normal temperature is usually around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Mild fevers usually get better without treatment. Get emergency or immediate medical help for:
-
Anyone with a fever of 105 degrees or higher. Brain damage may occur if body temperature tops 107.6 degrees.
-
Children younger than 3 months with a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
-
Older adults with a fever not related to an existing illness.
-
Children who are having seizures, cannot be awakened easily, cannot walk, or are having trouble breathing during a fever.
-
Kids whose fever lasts more than a few days.
